Meera gets security; petition to ban her from acting in India

Pakistan government has provided security to Lollywood actress Meera, even as a petition was filed in a Pakistani court seeking to ban her from acting in Indian films.

Meera, who returned from the sets of Mahesh Bhatt’s film ‘Nazar’ in Mumbai three days ago, was provided security after she took up the issue of threats with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Information Minister Sheikh Rashid. She had received threats for allegedly featuring in a kissing scene in the film. Meera lives in Lahore, the home of Pakistan’s fledgling film industry.

The petition was filed against Meera in the Sindh High Court in Karachi stating that she had performed in “immoral scenes” that did not match with Pakistan’s religious and social values.

The petition calling for a ban on the film would be presented before a two-member SHC bench for hearing, Pakistan TV ARY reported, adding the Religious Affairs Ministry and Culture and Tourism Ministry were also made party in the petition.

The court was asked to ban the film in Pakistan and order Meera to not work on such projects in future.

The petitioner’s lawyer told the channel that the court was asked to ban the film in Pakistan, as some scenes in the film were not reflective of Pakistani society.

Indian films are banned from screening in Pakistani theatres but cassettes and CDs of most of Bollywood films are sold in the markets well before the films are released in India.
