Are Your Toiletries Safe?

The Daily Mail reported on September 4th 2006 that campaigners claimed that cosmetics and toiletries are exposing women to 175 chemicals every day.
Below follows a extract from an article that appeared in the English Daily Mail on Tuesday Sept. 4 2006. Written by Pat Thomas.
BATH PRODUCTS:

Is There a Wrong Way to Wash Your Hair?

It’s not as simple as it sounds. There is a difference!
When washing your hair, it is best if you get in the shower. You may give yourself a back-ache and won’t be able to rinse properly if you wash your hair in the sink. Start by rinsing your hair to remove any leave-in conditioner or styling aids. Use a quarter sized dollop of shampoo and rub your hands together to distribute it. Put the shampoo on your scalp, not the ends of your hair. Work up a lather by massaging …

There are certain chemicals to avoid in shampoo and conditioners. Some of these are Butylated Hydroxytoluene, Coal Tar, Cocamide DEA/Lauramide DEA, Diazolidinyl Urea, Formaldehyde, Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl), Propylene Glycol, Triethanolamine and Sodium Laureth/Sodium Laurel Sulfate. There’s plenty you can do to hang on to what hair you have and encourage healthy regrowth without spending an arm and a leg for it. You can start by taking a look in your very own kitchen. If you are suffering from hair loss or baldness, apply a paste of hot olive oil, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to the scalp before shampooing your hair. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then shampoo. A heat cap may be applied for deeper penetration. Even …

They can be useful in more ways than you can imagine. (Trust me—I’m not trying to shill for Martha Stuart here) Shampoo bottles come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and both the plastic and glass ones can be used for hobbies, decoration, household use, on vacation, and many other things.

Hair is coated with a layer of sebum a natural oil produced by sebaceous gland lying next to each hair follicle in the scalp.
The sebum gives the hair its shine and also protects it from losing its own moisture content. The amount of oil secreted by the sebaceous glands determine whether the hair is dry, greasy or normal.
At the same time use of harsh shampoo, or dry windy weather can strip the natural oils from the scalp and hair leaving it dull and dry.

However, hair can’t hold up against the vagaries of an urban lifestyle, which can leave it looking dull, and feeling rough and brittle. Fortunately, in most cases the damage can be repaired thanks to the breed of conditioners available today. They are our hair’s best line of defence. Here’s more about conditioners.
What they do
Hair is generally conditioned after a cleansing treatment (shampooing). Normally a shampoo is slightly alkaline in nature, which helps it clean the dirt or build up from hair products that settles on the hair. A conditioner is …
