Slumdog ‘breaches $200m barrier’

Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire has crossed the $200m (£140m) mark in box office takings around the world, according to figures in Variety.
The film industry daily says the Mumbai-based movie, which cost $15m to make, has now taken $217m at cinemas.
Slumdog is enjoying a further bounce at the box office after picking up eight Oscars at February’s Academy Awards.
Fox Searchlight, which released the rags-to-riches tale, said it expects the box office total to exceed $250m.
The company’s Steve Gilula told the paper: “It’s extraordinary. Very, very few films get past $200 million …

Rags-to-riches story “Slumdog Millionaire” continued its fairy-tale journey Sunday, winning seven prizes, including best picture, at the British Academy Film Awards and sealing its place as favorite for the Oscars later this month.

Dev Patel got loudest cheer at Baftas

London (IANS): Indian-origin British actor Dev Patel won the loudest cheer from fans as he walked up the red carpet for the Bafta awards ceremony.
The “Slumdog Millionaire” actor, who comes from an ordinary family in the London suburb of Harrow, received a deafening welcome from fans when he joined the red carpet at the Royal Opera House on Sunday night, Sky News reported.

London (IANS): Oscar-frontrunner “Slumdog Millionaire” is probably being targeted by an organised tinsel-town smear campaign with an eye on gate receipts, British and US newspapers say.
“Could an organised smear campaign be about to derail the extraordinary rags-to-riches story of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’?” The Independent said on Saturday after the film’s makers were hit by a barrage of negative publicity this week.
The British filmmakers have been accused of peddling “poverty porn” and of underpaying and exploiting child actors from the slums, forcing the director, producer and distributor to issue point-by-point denials.
